This article examines feminist responses from the Southern Cone, Peru and Spain to the increasingly visible presence of the British suffragette at the beginning of the 20th C. National Councils of Women founded in the region on the principle of Republican motherhood produced discourses marked by ambivalent politics vis a vis the “foreign” paradigm of the New Woman. The fear to transgress traditional gender mandates, exacerbated by the scorn thrown at the suffragette by leading male intellectuals in the region transverses these discourses. Given that the feminist networks built by the first generation of women writers in nineteenth century Lima and Buenos Aires have been well explored, this article purports to explore the less studied area of the legacy of this first generation of activists on to the next generation of Latin American and Spanish feminists.Este artículo se enfoca en los feminismos tempranos del Cono Sur, Perú y España y en sus diversos posicionamientos políticos frente a los sufragismos anglosajones. La construcción de los primeros Consejos de Mujeres en América Latina y España desde una posición maternalista decimonónica derivó en discursos marcados por la ambivalencia de políticas y afectos frente al paradigma “extranjero” de la nueva mujer. El temor de transgredir antiguos mandatos de género, agravado por el escarnio masculino de la suffragette en el campo intelectual latinoamericano y español, atraviesa estos discursos. El recorte geográfico cultural de la investigación tiene en cuenta que, si bien las redes de sociabilidad transandinas y transatlánticas que las ilustradas del último tercio del siglo XIX tejieron desde las veladas de Lima hacia Buenos Aires y Madrid han sido ampliamente estudiadas, es poco lo que se ha hecho para conectar los hilos de encuentros y desencuentros con sus herederas, las activistas feministas de principios del siglo XX.
