In 1981 we found that Chile had already become the second largest salmon producer in the world, with 245,000 tons per year, being surpassed only by Norway with 420,000 tons per year of production. By the 1990s, the industry's growth rate was over 10%. This prosperity had a positive impact on both jobs, income, education and infrastructure in the region where the salmon companies were located. The most surprising thing about the case of Chile is that this industry had started from scratch and in just 20 years had reached the preeminent second place of production in the world. However, on September 7, 2007, an event occurred that had a strong impact on the industry with the appearance of the ISA virus and, consequently, on companies. Some companies closed down, others laid off their employees en masse, and absolutely all fell in profitability. It was the first time that salmon companies had faced an event of this magnitude and their main concern was to know what would be its effect on the industry and how to deal with this situation.En 1981 encontramos que Chile ya se había convertido en el segundo productor de salmones en el mundo, con 245.000 toneladas anuales, siendo superado solamente por Noruega con 420.000 toneladas anuales de producción. Para los años noventa, la tasa de crecimiento de la industria se situaba por sobre el 10%. Esta prosperidad causó un impacto positivo tanto en empleos, ingresos, educación como en la infraestructura de la región en donde se ubicaban las compañías salmoneras. Lo más sorprendente del caso de Chile es que esta industria había partido desde cero y en sólo 20 años había llegado al preeminente segundo lugar de producción en el mundo. Sin embargo, el 7 de septiembre de 2007 ocurrió un hecho que provocó un fuerte impacto en la industria con la aparición del virus ISA y, por consiguiente, en las empresas. Algunas compañías cerraron, otras despidieron masivamente a sus empleados y absolutamente todas cayeron en su rentabilidad. Era la primera vez que las empresas salmoneras se enfrentaban a un hecho de esta magnitud y su principal preocupación fue saber cuál sería su efecto en la industria y cómo lidiar con esta situación.
