| dc.description | This article proposes a reading of the nineteenth-century novel Cosas de los vivos contadas por los muertos, written by Juan Rafael Allende in 1896 and published in the satirical newspaper El Jeneral Pililo. This story constitutes a showcase of disease and death in Chile in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Considering the humor of the story and its tragic theme simultaneously, we have proposed highlighting the relationship between illness, death, and humor, analyzing a scene that describes one of the most feared evils of the time, catalepsy. The tension between the laughable and the serious is part of the anticlerical campaign of the Chilean author, through which he satirically intervenes in the spaces of the death of nineteenth-century Santiago in order to democratize them, erode the power of the Catholic Church, advocate for the secularism of the State and denounce the vanity and vices of emerging social groups. | en-US |
| dc.description | Resumen: El presente artículo propone una lectura de la novela decimonónica Cosas de los vivos contadas por los muertos, escrita por Juan Rafael Allende en 1896 y publicada en el periódico satírico El Jeneral Pililo (1896-1898). Dicha novela se nos presenta como una vitrina de la enfermedad y la muerte en el último cuarto del siglo XIX en Chile. Considerando el humorismo de sus páginas, y a la vez su temática trágica, nos hemos propuesto destacar la relación entre la enfermedad, la muerte y el humor, analizando una escena que describe uno de los males más temidos de la época, la Catalepsia. La tensión entre lo risible y lo serio se enmarca en la campaña anticlerical del autor chileno, mediante la cual interviene satíricamente los espacios de la muerte del Santiago decimonónico a fin de democratizarlos, erosionar el poder de la iglesia católica, abogar por el laicismo de Estado y denunciar la vanidad y los vicios de los grupos sociales emergentes. | es-ES |
