In this article I provide some critical reflections on a specific doctoral research experience, the objective of which has been to understand how child protection came to be defined as a social problem in the Americas, focusing on the Inter-American Children’s Institute as a case study. This article has two main aims. First, by expanding on the theoretical and methodological decisions which led to the dissertation’s research questions, objectives, and corpus, this paper represents an attempt to illuminate the progressive nature of research, which usually we can see only in its final and complete stage. Secondly, by reassessing the key terms and categories of analysis deployed in the study of child protection in the Americas, this article seeks to render these tools available for other scholars interested in the research and construction of social problems.En este artículo se presentan algunas reflexiones críticas en torno a una experiencia concreta de investigación doctoral, cuyo objetivo ha sido comprender los procesos a través de los cuales la protección de la infancia devino un problema social en América, a partir del caso del Instituto Interamericano del Niño, la Niña y Adolescentes. Tal reflexión tiene dos objetivos: por un lado, poner en valor aquellas decisiones teórico-metodológicas que permitieron establecer las preguntas, el corpus y los objetivos centrales de la investigación, en un esfuerzo por arrojar luz sobre aquellos procesos a los cuales, en general, tenemos acceso en su forma final y acabada; y por otro, retomar las claves y dimensiones de análisis centrales para el abordaje de la protección de la infancia en América como un objeto de estudio específico, y así dejar disponibles esas herramientas para otros trabajos centrados en la construcción de problemas sociales.
