The aim of this article is to make a historical account of the social evaluations about the presence of women in the labor market registered in parliamentary discussions in Uruguay between 1912 and 1947. The analysis followed a previous systematization of parliamentary discussions about wage regulation that facilitated the review of the source material. The analysis shows how the debates around the role of working women were based on the tension between concerns regarding their role as mothers and caregivers and the changing needs of the labor market, particularly in the context of an ongoing industrialization process.El objetivo de este artículo es realizar un racconto de las valoraciones sociales en torno a la presencia de las mujeres en el mercado de trabajo, registradas en las discusiones parlamentarias en Uruguay entre 1912 y 1947. Para este análisis se siguió un trabajo preexistente sobre el régimen jurídico del salario y se consultaron las discusiones parlamentarias respectivas a las leyes discutidas en materia de regulación salarial. Los resultados muestran cómo la argumentación sobre el rol de la mujer trabajadora fue construyéndose en una pulsión, entre las preocupaciones socialmente impuestas en cuanto a su rol de madres y sus tareas reproductivas y las necesidades cambiantes del mercado de trabajo, especialmente en el marco de un proceso de industrialización en curso.
