The earthquake and tsunami of May 24, 1751 devastated La Concepción, located in present-day Penco. This event led the authorities to transfer the city to its current location. To what extent was geography decisive in the selection of the new site? How has it been transformed subsequently? This article aims at answering these questions and reveals the geographical factors involved in the location, position, and shape of the new plan. The territory’s transformative process that will lead to the current landscape is explained, suggesting a comparative analysis of the historical cartography as a working method, looking at natural resources and risks, property structure, climate, and other geographical factors that influenced the selection of the site.El terremoto y tsunami del 24 de mayo de 1751 devastó La Concepción, ubicada en la actual Penco. Este evento condujo a las autoridades a trasladarla a su ubicación actual. ¿Hasta qué punto resultó determinante la geografía en la selección del nuevo emplazamiento? ¿Cómo se ha ido transformando posteriormente? Este trabajo tiene por objetivo responder estas preguntas y revelar los factores geográficos que intervinieron en la localización, la posición y la forma de la nueva planta. Se explica el proceso transformador del territorio que dará lugar al paisaje actual y se propone el análisis comparativo de la cartografía histórica como método de trabajo, observando recursos y riesgos naturales, estructura de la propiedad, clima y otros factores geográficos que incidieron en la selección del emplazamiento.
