dc.descriptionThe Ministerial Health Secretariat of the 9th Region saw the need of assessing the present indices of tobacco consumption, so as to work with greater precision on the continuance of the sanitary goals for 20101. Thus it has carried out a study on the Prevalence of Tobacco Consumption in Araucanía. This study, of a quantitative-descriptive character had, as its objective group, 8th grade schoolchildren, women of fertile age and the general population of the 31 communes of the Region. An autoapplied and anonymous survey was carried out on a representative sample. The data were stored and subsequently analyzed with the Excel 2000 program; 8382 surveys were processed. As a result of this survey it was possible to determine that, as a Region, we are within the national average, but it uncovered worrying indices of tobacco consumption in some communes. Thus, 19 communes of the Region present a prevalence of tobacco usage exceeding the national baseline in one or another of the three objective groups. The first objective group were the 8th grade schoolchildren showing a 23.2%, distant from the 20% proposed by the Ministry of Health as the country's limit for the year 2010. Women of fertile age presented a regional average of 28% of tobacco usage, remaining below the sanitary limit of 40%, as suggested. The population of the Region, in general, shows a 36% of tobacco consumption, the country limit for the year 2010 having been placed at 30% in this segment of the population. dc.descriptionLa Secretaría Ministerial de Salud IX Región, tuvo la necesidad de medir cuáles eran los actuales índices de consumo de tabaco, para trabajar con mayor precisión en la consecución de las metas sanitarias para el año 20101. Es así como ha realizado un estudio sobre la Prevalencia del Consumo de Tabaco en la Araucanía. Este estudio, de carácter cuantitativo-descriptivo, tuvo como grupo objetivo a los escolares de 8° básico, mujeres en edad fértil y población en general, de las 31 comunas de la región. Se realizó una encuesta autoaplicada y anónima a una muestra representativa. Los datos fueron almacenados y luego analizados en programa excel 2000, siendo procesadas 8.382 encuestas. A raíz de este análisis fue posible determinar que como Región estamos ubicados bajo el promedio nacional, pero dejó al  descubierto preocupantes índices de consumo de tabaco en algunas comunas. Es así, como 19 comunas de la Región, presentan prevalencia de consumo de tabaco sobre línea base nacional, en alguno de los tres grupos objetivos. El primer grupo objetivo, fueron los escolares de octavo año, mostrando un 23,2% distante del 20% propuesto por el Ministerio de Salud como meta país para el año 2010.Las mujeres en edad fértil presentaron un promedio regional de 28% de consumo de tabaco, situándonos más bajo de la meta sanitaria propuesta en un 40%. La población en general de la Región muestra un 36% de consumo de tabaco siendo la meta país al 2010 de un 30% en este segmento de la población. En este estudio además, se contempló el consumo de tabaco en la población Mapuche, registrándose, en la población general, un mayor consumo de cigarrillos con  un 26%.es-ES
