Following its own trajectory of economic development, China achieved an average GDP growth of 9.6 % between 1979 and 2004, and maintains 60 % of its population in rural areas. Township and Village Enterprises (TVEs) emerged in these areas in the early 1980s, considered by various scholars as the Chinese economic "engine of growth." With their innovative organizational structures they absorb large contingents of workers and have contributed to the rapid industrialization of the country. In addition to their great contribution to Chinese economic development, TVEs are responsible for high levels of exports. This article describes some of the characteristics of its ownership and organization, and points out how they contribute to employment and the Chinese export strategy. To conclude, it synthesizes the experience of TVE development and the teachings that could be applied in other geographical and cultural contexts, especially in Latin America.Siguiendo su propia trayectoria de desarrollo económico, China obtuvo un crecimiento medio del PIB de 9,6 % entre 1979 y 2004, y mantiene el 60 % de su población en zonas rurales. En el inicio de los años ochenta surgieron en estas zonas las Township and Village Enterprises (TVEs), consideradas por varios estudiosos como el «motor del crecimiento» económico chino. Con sus innovadoras estructuras organizacionales ellas absorben grandes contingentes de trabajadores y han contribuido a industrializar rápidamente el país. Además de su gran aporte al desarrollo económico chino, las TVEs son responsables de elevados niveles de exportaciones. Este artículo describe algunas de las características de su propiedad y organización, y señala cómo ellas contribuyen al empleo y a la estrategia china de exportación. Para concluir, sintetiza la experiencia de desarrollo de las TVE y las enseñanzas que podrían aplicarse en otros contextos geográficos y culturales, en especial el latinoamericano.
