Despite the consolidation of democracy in Latin America, the fact that it has weakened is related to the economic and social context that has given rise to the new international situation known as globalization. In order to evaluate the impact of this in the societies of the region, this article tries to unravel the meaning of the concept. After offering a brief overview of the democratic present in Latin America, globalization is placed in a historical perspective, it is about defining the different dimensions of the global world and the consequences of the new reality in the national life of the countries of the continent are analyzed.Pese a la consolidación de la democracia en América Latina, el hecho de que ella se haya debilitado se relaciona con el contexto económico y social que ha dado lugar la nueva situación internacional conocida como globalización. Para evaluar el impacto de esta en las sociedades de la región, este artículo procura desentrañar el significado del concepto. Tras ofrecer un breve panorama del presente democrático en América Latina, se ubica la globalización en una perspectiva histórica, se trata de definir las diferentes dimensiones del mundo global y se analizan las consecuencias de la nueva realidad en la vida nacional de los países del continente.
