One of the great challenges facing Europe in the face of globalization is how to preserve its "collective preferences", that is, social options that it has defended up to now, such as the balance between State and market, between social protection and economic competition, between interests of the world of work and those of capital. The article seeks to define the strengths and weaknesses of Europe in the face of globalization and the adherence that European citizens give to the European project. It refers to the growing pressures on this model with the arrival of China as a strong competitor in all sectors, and it is argued that one of its great weaknesses lies in the fact that, although shared sovereignty brings collective benefits, its political legitimacy it will always be inferior to national legitimacy.Uno de los grandes retos que enfrenta Europa ante la globalización es cómo preservar sus “preferencias colectivas “, esto es, opciones sociales que ha defendido hasta ahora, tales como el equilibrio entre Estado y mercado, entre protección social y competencia económica, entre los intereses del mundo del trabajo y los del capital. El artículo procura definir las fortalezas y las debilidades de Europa ante la mundialización y la adhesión que prestan los ciudadanos europeos al proyecto europeo. Se refiere a las crecientes presiones de que es objeto este modelo con la llegada de China como fuerte competidor en todos los sectores, y se sostiene que una de sus grandes debilidades radica en que, si bien la soberanía compartida acarrea beneficios colectivos, su legitimidad política siempre será inferior a la legitimidad nacional.
