This issue of International Studies is doubly special. First, for being dedicated to Professor Gustavo Lagos, a great promoter of Latin American integration and, second, for dedicating its contents to Professor Lagos' fundamental concern: the immediate and (unfortunately) rather problematic future of Latin America. That attention is not provoked by a luminous horizon; again we are concerned with the risk of international marginalization. It is not necessary to dramatize to visualize that possibility. It is therefore necessary to contribute to deepening the diagnosis, study and reflection to elucidate, in addition to the efforts made by regional organizations, the keys to the situation. Surely not with an exclusively academic objective, but rather to give support to those who must lead the actions and formulate policies aimed at reversing the process. Such is the meaning of the papers that we present in this edition.El presente número de Estudios Internacionales es doblemente especial. Primero, por estar dedicado al profesor Gustavo Lagos, gran promotor de la integración latinoamericana y, en segundo lugar, por dedicar sus contenidos a la preocupación fundamental del profesor Lagos: el futuro inmediato y (desafortunadamente) más bien problemático de América Latina. Es que la atención no la suscita un horizonte luminoso; de nuevo nos ocupa el riesgo de la marginalidad internacional. No es preciso dramatizar para visualizar esa posibilidad. Es preciso, entonces, contribuir a profundizar el diagnóstico, el estudio y la reflexión para dilucidar, complementariamente a los esfuerzos que realizan los organismos regionales, las claves de la situación. Por cierto, no con un objetivo exclusivamente académico, sino para dar apoyo a quienes deben liderar las acciones y formular las políticas conducentes a revertir el proceso. Tal es el sentido de los trabajos que presentamos en esta edición.
