This article argues that the concern of the United States Catholic Church for the protection and promotion of human rights is a relatively recent issue, as it is also for North American society. Its attitude in this regard is guided by a central, local dimension –with their own positions based on their tradition and their environment– and a global one given by the experience that their contact with other realities of the world has given them, particularly in Latin America. All of the above, within the framework of the Vatican doctrine of human rights, has produced an interesting exchange between North American society and the experience of its Catholic Church in a mutual feeding and sensitization of these experiences, without forgetting the influence exerted, in addition, in the local churches where these missionaries have been assigned to act.Este artículo plantea que la preocupación de la Iglesia Católica de Estados Unidos por la protección y promoción de los derechos humanos es un asunto relativamente reciente, como lo es también para la sociedad norteamericana. Su actitud a este respecto se orienta por una dimensión central, local –con sus posiciones propias basadas en su tradición y su medio– y una global dada por la experiencia que le ha dado su contacto con otras realidades del mundo, particularmente en América Latina. Todo lo anterior, en el marco de la doctrina vaticana de los derechos humanos, ha producido un interesante intercambio entre la sociedad norteamericana y la experiencia de su Iglesia Católica en un mutuo alimentarse y sensibilizarse de estas experiencias, sin olvidar la influencia ejercida, además, en las iglesias locales donde a estos misioneros les ha correspondido actuar.
