For more than six years the people of the Autonomous Republic of Chechnya fought for their independence. It was fought hard by the Russian Federation under whose jurisdiction it is organized. It was a long conflict that did not have the support of the West and, therefore, defending the human rights of Chechens would have been too expensive for those who advocate that genocide is a war crime. On the other hand, Chechen separatist guerrillas have been accused of genocide against ethnic and religious minorities. The Russian Federation clearly demonstrated that it continues to be an international power that is governed by its own interests and values, just as the others do. This is the reality and the demonstration that the relations between the nations of the world are based on the balance of powers.Durante más de seis años el pueblo de la República Autónoma de Chechenia luchó por obtener su independencia. Fue duramente combatido por la Federación Rusa bajo cuya jurisdicción está organizada. Fue un largo conflicto que no contó con el apoyo del Occidente y, por lo tanto, defender los derechos humanos de los chechenos habría resultado demasiado caro para quienes preconizan que el genocidio es un crimen de guerra.
