This paper presents an analysis of the development of the oil industry in Mexico and its importance for the economic development of this country. First, the development of said industry from its beginnings at the end of the last century to the 1970s is analyzed. Second, the relationship between the oil industry and the foreign policy followed by Mexico is analyzed, where Oil has been used by the governments of that country as an instrument of foreign policy through which it has sought to achieve national objectives in international politics. Finally, the last section analyzes the role of oil in the forging of the economic crisis that Mexico has suffered since 1980 and its role in the current process of trade liberalization and structural adjustment of the economy.En el presente artículo se presenta un análisis sobre el desarrollo de la industria petrolera en México y su importancia para el desarrollo económico de este país. Se analiza en primer lugar, el desarrollo de dicha industria desde sus inicios a finales del siglo pasado y hasta la década de 1970. En segundo lugar, se analiza la relación existente entre la industria del petróleo y la política exterior seguida por México, en donde el petróleo ha sido utilizado por los gobiernos de dicho país como un instrumento de la política exterior mediante el cual se ha buscado realizar objetivos nacionales en la política internacional. Finalmente, en la última sección se analiza el rol del petróleo en el forjamiento de la crisis económica que ha sufrido México desde 1980 y su rol en el actual proceso de liberalización comercial y ajuste estructural de la economía.
