This paper is limited to the analysis and study of terrorism, a phenomenon that has emerged as a significant international problem since the 1960s. For this, first a conceptual distinction is made between terrorism and guerrilla, strategies that are often confused. Then a characterization of the terrorist groups is carried out, identifying the types that emerged in the West in the 70s and 80s. In the post-Cold War, terrorism has acquired particular characteristics because the disappearance of the East-West conflict has produced a laxity in the international system, thanks to which ethnic and regional conflicts have proliferated and new radical movements that lead to unprecedented forms of terrorism are born. However, we maintain that Islamic fundamentalist groups manifest particular characteristics, which is why those that stand out for their strength and militancy are identified, so it cannot be predicted that they will exhaust their capacity for action and end up disappearing.El presente trabajo se circunscribe al análisis y estudio del terrorismo, fenómeno que desde los años sesenta surge como un problema internacional significativo. Para esto, primeramente se distingue conceptualmente entre terrorismo y guerrilla, estrategias que a menudo se confunden. Luego se realiza una caracterización de los grupos terroristas, identificándose los tipos surgidos en Occidente en los 70 y 80. En la post-Guerra Fría, el terrorismo ha adquirido características particulares porque la desaparición del conflicto Este-Oeste ha producido una laxitud en el sistema internacional, gracias a la cual han proliferado conflictos étnicos y regionales en los cuales nacen nuevos movimientos radicales que conducen a formas inéditas de terrorismo. Sin embargo, sostenemos que los grupos fundamentalistas islámicos manifiestan características particulares, por ello se identifican aquellos que se destacan por su fuerza y militancia, por lo que no se puede predecir que agoten su capacidad de acción y terminen por desaparecer.
