In this essay, the insufficiency of the realist or neorealist school to explain contemporary international reality or, mutatis mutandi, the need for new cognitive maps to understand it is raised. We hold that there are four levels that have an importance not only explanatory but also causal diametrically opposed to that assigned to it by the classical school; These are: the East-West power conflict; second, the relative position of the great centers of world power; third, the emergence of a more fragmented and interdependent world that tends, if not to dilute, at least to restrict the capacity of these great powers by involving them in an increasing number of international games of uncertain results and, finally, the step into the forefront of a set of human factors that had not previously been considered within the classical repertoire of power resources.En este ensayo se plantea la insuficiencia de la escuela realista o neorrealista para explicar la realidad internacional contemporánea o, mutatis mutandi, la necesidad de nuevos mapas cognitivos para comprenderla. Sostenemos que son cuatro los niveles que tienen una importancia no solamente explicativa sino aún causal diametralmente opuesta a la que le asignaría la escuela clásica; estos son: el conflicto de poder Este-Oeste; segundo, la posición relativa de los grandes centros de poder mundial; tercero, el surgimiento de un mundo más fragmentado e interdependiente que tiende, si no a diluir, por los menos a restringir la capacidad de esas grandes potencias al involucrarlas en un creciente número de juegos internacionales de inciertos resultados y, por último, el paso a primera fila de un conjunto de factores humanos que anteriormente no había sido considerado dentro del repertorio clásico de los recursos de poder.
