This paper analyzes the outstanding theoretical themes and approaches in the growing literature on foreign policies in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our purpose is to examine the various theoretical perspectives for the study of the external behavior of the countries of the region, including the approach to decision-making. As will be seen, there is a multiplicity of theoretical approaches to foreign policies in the region, the relative value of which largely depends on the problem to be investigated. The challenge for the future is to integrate those perspectives that are effectively compatible, to arrive at more complex and profound explanations of the foreign behavior of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.En el presente artículo se analizan los temas y enfoques teóricos sobresalientes en la creciente literatura sobre políticas exteriores de América Latina y El Caribe. Nuestro propósito es examinar las diversas perspectivas teóricas para el estudio del comportamiento externo de los países de la región, entre los que figura el enfoque de la toma de decisiones. Como se verá, existe una multiplicidad de aproximaciones teóricas a las políticas exteriores de la región, cuyo valor relativo depende en gran medida del problema por investigar. El desafío del futuro está en integrar aquellas perspectivas que efectivamente son compatibles, para arribar a explicaciones más complejas y profundas de la conducta exterior de los países de América Latina y el Caribe.
