Beyond the denunciation regarding the international subordination to which developing countries are subjected, the question arises: is it possible to visualize changes of a certain magnitude in terms of their role within the world economic system? To advance in the understanding of the present, it is necessary to return to History. The first part of this work is devoted to this. Starting from an overview of the changes that occurred during the crisis at the level of relations between North and South, the second part presents the lines of force of the process that led to the outbreak of the old periphery. On this basis, finally, in the third part an analysis is carried out aimed at highlighting the difficulties and insufficiencies faced by the main theoretical paradigms of development and underdevelopment.Más allá de las denuncias respecto a la subordinación internacional a que están sometidos los países en desarrollo surge la pregunta: ¿es posible visualizar cambios de cierta envergadura en cuanto a su papel al interior del sistema económico mundial? Para avanzar en la comprensión del presente es preciso retornar a la historia. La primera parte de este trabajo se consagra a ello. A partir de un panorama general sobre los cambios ocurridos durante la crisis a nivel de las relaciones entre el Norte y el Sur, la segunda parte presenta las líneas de fuerza del proceso que desemboca en el estallido de la antigua periferia. Sobre esta base, finalmente, en la tercera parte se realiza a un análisis encaminado a subrayar las dificultades e insuficiencias que enfrentan los principales paradigmas teóricos del desarrollo y subdesarrollo.
