The purpose of this paper is to analyze recent events in the Mexican economy and the prospects for its adjustment program. The results achieved so far are few: the first quarter of 1983 has been particularly difficult, in the sense that the costs of adjustment have become apparent while, in general, the positive results have yet to be seen. This raises questions about its severity and compatibility with social and political activity and whether it offers the best solution to problems for an economy in dire need of structural adjustments. We maintain that these programs must be stimulated and given the greatest possible support, although in the short term they may lead to a weakening of the trade account, since in the medium term they will lead to a more solid external and budgetary situation.Este trabajo tiene por objeto analizar los sucesos recientes de la economía mexicana y las perspectivas de su programa de ajuste. Los resultados logrados hasta ahora son pocos: el primer trimestre de 1983 ha sido particularmente difícil, en el sentido de que han quedado de manifiesto los costos del ajuste mientras que, en general, los resultados positivos aún no se dejan ver. Esto genera cuestionamientos sobre su severidad y compatibilidad con la actividad social y política y si ofrece la mejor solución a los problemas a una economía necesitada de ajustes estructurales. Sostenemos que es preciso estimular estos programas y prestarles el mayor apoyo posible, aunque a corto plazo puedan acarrear un debilitamiento de la cuenta comercial, puesto que a plazo mediano conducirán a una situación externa y presupuestaria más sólida.
