| dc.description | This article argues that the United States and Latin America will eventually have to resort, like it or not, to a "negotiated settlement" of their historical ties. The nature of that arrangement - friendly or hostile - will require that the United States be much more willing to abandon its favorite but outdated interpretations of the international conduct of the Latin states, prevailing at the beginning of the postwar period. Latin America, for its part, will have to seriously and realistically assess the new future of the United States without the tricky rhetoric that has characterized much of the literature on relations between the two in the last decade. | en-US |
| dc.description | En el presente artículo se sostiene que los Estados Unidos y América Latina tendrán que recurrir con el tiempo, quiérase o no, a un "arreglo negociado" de sus vínculos históricos. La índole de ese arreglo –amigable u hostil– exigirá que los Estados Unidos se muestren mucho más dispuestos a abandonar sus interpretaciones predilectas, pero anticuadas, sobre la conducta internacional de los estados latinos, imperantes al comenzar la postguerra. América Latina, por su parte, tendrá que evaluar con seriedad y realismo el nuevo futuro de los Estados Unidos sin la retórica capciosa que ha caracterizado a gran parte de la literatura sobre las relaciones entre ambos en la última década. | es-ES |
