This paper develops the historical antecedents and the elements that make up the foreign policies of Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, in addition to raising certain questions: is the audacity and dynamism, the outstanding characteristics of Brazilian foreign policy, a new phenomenon or are they a result of a historical tradition rich in experiences and challenges? Is the reserved and cautious foreign policy, the attitude of distrust towards the outside world, the intransigence in the defense of self-preservation principles, and the non-intervention, and, in general Mexican prudence, are they not justified by reason of their tragic historical experiences? In the Argentine case, it is suggested that whoever intends to understand current Argentine foreign policy must bear in mind some historical antecedents that are decisive: the so-called Third Position and the Economic Agreements signed during the second presidency of General Perón.En este trabajo se desarrollan los antecedentes históricos y los elementos que componen las políticas exteriores de Brasil, México y Argentina, además de plantear ciertas interrogantes: la audacia y el dinamismo, características sobresalientes de la política exterior brasileña, ¿constituyen un fenómeno novedoso o se trata de la resultante de una tradición histórica rica en experiencias y desafíos? ¿La política exterior reservada y cautelosa, la actitud de desconfianza respecto del mundo exterior, la intransigencia en la defensa de principios que hacen a la auto preservación y la no intervención, y en general la prudencia mexicana, ¿no se justifican en razón de sus trágicas experiencias históricas? En el caso argentino, se plantea que quien pretenda comprender la actual política exterior argentina debe tener presente algunos antecedentes históricos que resultan decisivos: la denominada Tercera Posición y los Acuerdos Económicos firmados durante la segunda presidencia del General Perón.
