West Germany has managed to play a prominent role in international politics. Its foreign policy is no longer totally circumscribed by the will of the powers that previously occupied it. This change occurs amid a general relaxation of the once rigid bipolar system that characterized the years immediately following World War II and the new German self-assertion. The division of Germany maintains the ability of the Federal Republic to maneuver, within relatively narrow margins, thus conferring certain precariousness to each of its movements. The future stability of Europe depends in part on how West Germany is aware of this margin and how it exploits it. Hence the German problem is now emerging in a new, more difficult perspective, and implicitly posing a greater challenge.Alemania Occidental ha logrado ejercer un papel destacado en la política internacional. La estabilidad futura de Europa depende parcialmente de la manera en que Alemania Occidental tome conciencia de este margen y de la forma en que lo explote. De ahí que el problema alemán se perfile ahora en una perspectiva nueva, más difícil, y que implícitamente plantee un desafío mayor.
