The history of Rwanda cannot be reduced to the genocide, but at the same time, memories of the past cannot be built by silencing the pain of victims and victimizers, denying its existence. Given the overall lack of knowledge about the country, this genocide (that took place 20 years ago) is as unexplainable as the new image of economic prosperity and political stability. The purpose of this article is to contribute to the historical-political analysis of Rwanda from July 1994 to c. April 2014,foregrounding the existence of spaces for civil society to elaborate the memory of the recent past and solutions to overcome the ethical rupture constituted by the genocide.La historia de Rwanda no puede quedar reducida al genocidio, de igual forma que las memorias del pasado no se pueden construir silenciando el dolor de victimas y victimarios, negando que existió. Ante el gran desconocimiento de ese país, resultan tan sorprendentes como incomprensibles tanto el genocidio (hace 20 años) como su nueva imagen de prosperidad económica y estabilidad política. El objetivo de este artículo es contribuir al análisis histórico-político de Rwanda desde julio de 1994 hasta c. abril de 2014, destacando la inexistencia de espacios para que la sociedad civil elabore la memoria del pasado reciente y las soluciones para superar el rompimiento ético que significó el genocidio.
