| dc.description | In 1894, French Army Captain Alfred Dreyfus was accused of spying for Germany and sentenced to life in prison on Devil's Island, located off French Guiana. There he lived the sentence of him locked up in a small stone house and shackled every night. He was publicly and dishonorably demoted. In 1899, a new court martial was ordered. Dreyfus was again found guilty, but under extenuating circumstances, by a vote of five to two. The sentence was reduced to ten years. In 1906 a third trial was held. A few years earlier he had obtained a pardon. In this last trial he was declared innocent. More than ten years had passed since his conviction. | en-US |
| dc.description | En 1894, el capitán del ejército francés Alfred Dreyfus fue acusado de espiar para Alemania y condenado a prisión perpetua en la Isla del Diablo, ubicada frente a la Guayana francesa. Allí vivió su condena encerrado en una pequeña casa de piedra y engrillado cada noche. Fue degradado pública y deshonrosamente. En 1899, se ordenó un nuevo consejo de guerra. Dreyfus fue nuevamente encontrado culpable, pero con circunstancias atenuanres, por cinco votos contra dos. La sentencia fue reducida a diez años. En 1906 se le realizó un tercer juicio. Unos años antes había logrado el indulto. En este último juicio fue declarado inocente. Habían transcurrido más de diez años desde su condena. | es-ES |
