Abstract
The reasons for which the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) rejected the radio and television regional policies design from its creation in 1991 to the year 2007 are questioned in this paper. The methodological strategy involves the case study for regional analysis and the application of comparative methods for the national cases (Argentine, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) and for other contemporary processes of regionalization (European Union and the North American Free Trade Agreement). The radio and TV national public policies implemented by full members and those produced within the framework of the regional bloc are analysed. Besides, a second interregional comparison is traced supposing this contrast provides valuable elements for the evaluation. The results show that though isolated attempts, the radio and television regional policies were not present at the strategic agenda of MERCOSUR during the analysed period.
