dc.descriptionThe most used method for starting complementary feeding is the parents-led weaning with foods of puree consistency; however, in recent years, the Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) has been positioning itself as a new method of choice, in which the baby guides the feeding process. The BLW presents benefits recognized mainly by mothers who implement the method, among which are the integration of the baby into family meals, greater autonomy, and less food selectivity. On the other hand, health professionals, despite recognizing its advantages, tend to be a little more reluctant to recommend the method, expressing concern about a possible deficit in energy and nutrients intake, risk of choking, and delayed growth. However, the results between studies are mixed, and the evidence supporting both benefits and risks needs to be analyzed in more studies. The objective of this update is to know in depth the BLW as a method of introducing complementary feeding, as well as the benefits and risks defined in the studies analyzed.en-US
dc.descriptionEl método más utilizado para iniciar la alimentación complementaria es el dirigido por los padres con alimentos en consistencia papilla; sin embargo, en los últimos años, el Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) ha ido posicionándose como un nuevo método de elección, en el cual es el bebé quien guía el proceso de alimentación. BLW presenta beneficios reconocidos principalmente por las madres que implementan el método, entre los que destacan la integración del bebé a las comidas familiares, mayor autonomía y menor selectividad alimentaria. Por otra parte, los profesionales de la salud, a pesar de reconocer las ventajas, suelen mostrarse un poco más reticentes a recomendar el método, refiriendo preocupación por un posible déficit del consumo de energía y algunos nutrientes, riesgo de asfixia, y retraso del crecimiento. Sin embargo, los resultados entre los estudios son dispares, y la evidencia que respalda tanto los beneficios como los riesgos debe ser analizada en una mayor cantidad de estudios. El objetivo de esta actualización es conocer en profundidad el BLW como método introductorio de la alimentación complementaria, así como los beneficios y riesgos definidos en los estudios analizados.es-ES
