Breastfeeding provides all the nutrients to strengthen the immune system and the physical and mental development of the infant. It is exclusively recommended up to 6 months of age and prolonged up to two years. To increase the prevalence of breastfeeding, it must be valued by the breastfeeding women themselves. Objectives: To know the social valuation of the practice of breastfeeding and the difficulties that influence the early weaning in infants from five regions of Chile. Patients and Method: This investigation was based on the interpretive paradigm, from a phenomenological approach with a qualitative methodology. Thirty-five breastfeeding mothers participated in a semi-structured interview. The analytical strategy of grounded theory was used for the analysis. The qualitative data management software Atlas Ti, 8 was used. Results: It is evident that the social dimension and its categories (support network of the partner, family, and women of the family) are fundamental to maintaining EBF since weaning occurred when these were not available. Conclusions: Women perceive great value in the support networks of the partner, family, and female family members to maintain breastfeeding. The breastfeeding process is a complex phenomenon and not without problems, which is highly influenced by the social dimensions that generate the possibility of maintaining breastfeeding until 6 months or longer or, on the contrary, they influence its suspension.La lactancia materna proporciona todos los nutrientes para fortalecer el sistema inmunológico, el desarrollo físico y mental del lactante. Se recomienda de forma exclusiva hasta los 6 meses de vida y prolongarla hasta los dos años. Para aumentar la prevalencia de lactancia materna es esencial que sea valorada por las propias mujeres que amamantan. Objetivos: Conocer la valoración social de la práctica de lactancia materna y las dificultades que inciden en el destete precoz en lactantes menores de cinco regiones de Chile. Pacientes y Método: La presente investigación se basó en el paradigma interpretativo, desde un enfoque fenomenológico con una metodología cualitativa. Participaron 35 madres que amamantan, a quienes se les aplicó una entrevista semiestructurada. Para el análisis se utilizó la estrategia analítica de la teoría fundamentada. Se utilizó el software de gestión de datos cualitativos Atlas Ti, 8. Resultados: Se evidencia que la dimensión social y sus categorías: red de apoyo, de la pareja, familia y mujeres de la familia son fundamentales para mantener lactancia materna exclusiva, generando destete cuando no se contaba con estas. Conclusiones: Las redes de apoyo, de pareja, familias y mujeres de la familia son percibidas por las mujeres de gran valor para mantener la lactancia. El proceso de lactancia es un fenómeno complejo y no exento de problemáticas, que se ve altamente influenciado por las dimensiones sociales y que generan la posibilidad de mantener la lactancia hasta los 6 meses o más o; por el contrario, inciden en su suspensión.
