dc.descriptionThe geographic location of the original towns has been reason for special attention on the part of anthropologists, archaeologists, historians and etnohistorians. The efforts to determinate the occupied spaces were developed during century XX initially. In the case of mapuches the precursors were Ricardo Latcham and Tomás Guevara who through their investigations delimited the spaces of this culture. The chronicles and colonial documents allow forming only an ample and confused idea about the precise location of the mapuches' territories. This is explained by the absence of cartography in century XVI. On the other hand, at the present time the descriptions of those spaces don't agree due to the transformations caused by the climatic and environmental factors. So the need to identify that geographic space and to represent it finally appears. In this article we will try to identify the characteristics of those territories comparing the colonial stories with the recent geographic studies.en-US
dc.descriptionLa localización geográfica de los pueblos originarios ha sido motivo de especial atención por parte de antropólogos, arqueólogos, historiadores y etnohistoriadores. Los esfuerzos por precisar los espacios ocupados se desarrollaron inicialmente durante el siglo XX. En el caso de los mapuches los precursores fueron Ricardo Latcham y Tomás Guevara, quienes a través de sus investigaciones delimitaron los espacios de esta cultura. Las crónicas y documentos coloniales sólo permiten formarse una idea amplia y confusa sobre la ubicación precisa de los territorios mapuches. Esto se explica por la ausencia de una cartografía en el siglo XVI. Por otra parte, las descripciones de esos espacios no coinciden en la actualidad debido a las transformaciones ocasionadas por los factores climáticos y medioambientales. Surge así la inquietud de identificar ese espacio geográfico y representarlo, y en este artículo procuraremos identificar las características de esos territorios comparando los relatos coloniales con los estudios geográficos recientes.es-ES
