Vicente Benavides's black legend has been one of the most particular manifestations of the Chilean history. From this premise, the main characteristics of these historiography myth are analyzed, in order to determine the real nature of this point of view, as well as the importance that this view has had in the official speech of the independence war.La leyenda negra de Vicente Benavides ha sido una de las manifestaciones más particulares de la historia chilena. A partir de esta premisa, se analizan las principales características de este mito historiográfico, a fin de poder determinar la real naturaleza de esta interpretación, así como la importancia que esta ha tenido en el discurso oficial de la guerra de independencia.
