Abstract
This article examines the relationship between urban concentration and efficiency in national economic growth. More specifically, it analyses the phenomena of urban agglomeration and polarization reversal and the role of secondary cities in the development process. A theoretical discussion of these issues is followed by a brief empirical review of the recent Brazilian experience with regard to urbanization, industrial descentralization, and the increasing importance of intermediate cities.
