Abstract
The paper reviews figures concerning official external assistance transferred to developing countries for urban development activities during the early 1980’s. Only projects with an explicit urban focus are included in analysis, fundamentally shelter, community services, urban transport, integrated urban and regional development and urban management projects. The paper documents the small size of official external assistance flows relative to actual needs. This finding documents the known fact that much of the effort to finance urban development will still have to be made by the countries themselves.
