dc.descriptionThis paper is a historical study based on documentary sources about the first thirty years of the production of phonograph records in Chile. It started with the commercial distribution of the first records of Chilean musicians and artists produced by the Russian immigrant Efrain Band Blumenzweig, who created a record company named “Fonografía Artística” for these purposes. The Chilean record industry gradually became part of the national musical industry at the beginning of the 20th century. It begun with the commercial distribution of wax cylinders, an activity which is almost completely unknown today. At first the musical production was centered on national artists and designed for mass audiences, at a time when the repertory of records commonly distributed on a commercial basis in Chile consisted of foreign music interpreted mainly by European artists. The origin, development and the national context of this process are discussed in this article on the basis of unpublished documentary sources along with information furnished by the family descendants of Efrain Band. Besides a great amount of records owned by private collectors and by the authors of this article have been examined.en-US
dc.descriptionEl presente artículo es un estudio historiográfico basado en fuentes documentales sobre los primeros treinta años de desarrollo de la producción fonográfica en Chile. Aborda la comercialización de las primeras grabaciones de músicos y artistas chilenos realizadas por el inmigrante ruso Efraín Band Blumenzweig, para lo cual creó una empresa fonográfica grabadora y comercializadora, que llevó por nombre “Fonografía Artística”. La fonografía chilena comienza a formar parte fundamental de la industria musical nacional a comienzos del siglo XX. Su primera etapa se inició con la comercialización de cilindros de cera y es casi totalmente desconocida en la actualidad. Marca el origen de un género de producción musical centrado en artistas nacionales y destinado al público de masas, a diferencia del repertorio de grabaciones que se comercializaban en dicha época, las que en su totalidad correspondían a música extranjera, interpretada por artistas prioritariamente europeos. El origen, desarrollo y contexto nacional de este proceso se abordan en este trabajo a partir de fuentes inéditas de archivo, junto a los antecedentes aportados por descendientes de la familia Band, y el examen de una gran cantidad de fonogramas en posesión de coleccionistas privados y de los autores de este artículo.es-ES
