Fernando García, recipient of the National Arts Prize in Music 2002, presents his recollections of the close ties that he and and his friend León Schidlowsky had with composers and Chilean musicians, poets, stage artists as well as visual artists who were active in Chile during the decade of the fifties. An emphasis is placed on the creative and innovative attitude that León Schidlowsky showed since his earliest works, his concern over social injustices in Chile and America and the importance of poetry and visual arts as stimulus for his music. To conclude, an analysis is made of the development reached during the twentieth century by the Chilean music institutions within the historical context of the country. This served as support for León Schidlowsky, Fernando García and many other composers in terms of carrying out studies in composition and creating music in Chile. This lasted until the decay of these institutions as a result of the 1973 military coup, and the subsequent impossibility of recovering their former importance even twenty years after the end of the dictatorial regime.El autor, Premio Nacional de Artes Musicales 2002, hace un recuerdo de la relación que durante más de una década mantuvo con León Schidlowsky, tanto en el campo de la creación musical junto a otros músicos chilenos como en las relaciones que sostuvieron con poetas, artistas del mundo de la escena y artistas visuales activos en Chile durante la década de los 50. Se pone de relieve el sentido creativo innovador de León Schidlowsky desde sus más tempranas composiciones, su inquietud por las injusticias sociales en Chile y América, la importancia de la poesía y las artes visuales como inspiración para su música, junto a los estrechos vínculos de amistad entre Fernando García y León Schidlowsky que se desarrollaran en este período. Como conclusión se hace un análisis del desarrollo alcanzado por las instituciones musicales chilenas en el contexto histórico del país durante el siglo XX, el que sirvió de base para que León Schidlowsky, Fernando García y tantos otros compositores pudieran formarse y desarrollar un quehacer en Chile, hasta el decaimiento de la institucionalidad musical a raíz del golpe militar de 1973 y su falta de recuperación veinte años después de concluida la dictadura.
