The aim of this article is to reflect upon the complications which thehistorians have faced when trying to characterize Manichaeism. In the first place, wewill identify, as an example of this, different characterizations that have been madethroughout history. In the second place, we will propose a possible solution whichavoids the attempt of confering an exclusive identity and which incorporates thetemporal and regional differences of the Manichaean religious tradition.    El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre las dificultades quelos historiadores han tenido a la hora de caracterizar al maniqueísmo. En primer lugar,se identificarán, a modo de ejemplo, diferentes caracterizaciones realizadas a lo largode la historia. En segundo lugar, se planteará una vía de solución que escape a esteintento de otorgar una identidad excluyente y que incorpore las diferencias temporalesy regionales de la tradición religiosa maniquea.
