Manuel Hidalgo Plaza is a relatively unknown figure in Chilean political history, but for those who recognize it, know of its magnitude both in shaping the Chilean labor movement as a politically organized force, and of the controversy that revolves around its real commitment to it, generated in large part by historiography faithful to communist orthodoxy. This article seeks, through a preliminary biographical reconstruction and, fundamentally, by compiling his performance during the constituent process of 1925, demonstrate Hidalgo’s commitment to ideas that would later become “Social Democrats”, showing in this sense his link with the basal and real political idea of Luis Emilio Recabarren, of which he was loyal squire during the time of the Socialist Workers’ Party (going forward, POS) and even later, having already transformed it into the Communist Party of Chile (going forward, PCCh).Manuel Hidalgo Plaza es una figura relativamente desconocida de la historia política chilena, pero para quienes si lo reconocen, saben de su magnitud tanto en la conformación del movimiento obrero chileno como fuerza políticamente organizada, como de la polémica existente en torno a su real compromiso con el mismo, generada en buena parte por la historiografía fiel a la ortodoxia comunista. Este artículo busca, por medio de una reconstrucción biográfica preliminar y, fundamentalmente, por medio de la recopilación de su actuación durante el proceso constituyente de 1925, demostrar el compromiso de Hidalgo con ideas que con el tiempo decantarían como “socialdemócratas”, mostrando en ese sentido su vinculación con el ideario político basal y real de Luis Emilio Recabarren, del cual fue leal escudero durante la época del Partido Obrero Socialista (en adelante, POS) y aún después, ya habiéndose transformado éste en el Partido Comunista de Chile (en adelante, PCCh).
