This paper analyses connections between systems theory and critical theory. Since current debates about these are circumscribed to systems theory perspectives, also called ‘critical systems theory’, we estimate as necessary to extend this discussion towards a -yet unknown- ‘critical theory of social systems’. With this, it is ultimately intended to overcome the risks of theoretical dogmatism and to open sociological thinking (systemic and critical) to the contingency of society.El presente artículo analiza conexiones entre teoría de sistemas y teoría crítica. Dado que la discusión actual acerca de éstas se ha limitado a la óptica de la teoría de sistemas, llamada también ‘teoría de sistemas crítica’, estimamos necesario ampliar el debate hacia una -aún inexistente- ‘teoría crítica de sistemas sociales’. Con ello, se pretende en definitiva superar los riesgos del dogmatismo teórico y abrir el pensamiento sociológico (sistémico y crítico) a la contingencia de la sociedad.
