This article examines the content of a source that has not been considered by the historiography, in order to study the “bad reputation” associated to the Chilean territory during the 16th century. Until now, the evidence of this perspective has mainly been analyzed through the work chroniclers and contemporaneous historians. This study researched data coming from another kind of sources: the proofs of merits and services made during the first three decades of the Spanish conquest (1535-1565). We suggest that these writings importantly contributed to the transmission of this “bad reputation.” These documents not only allow us to corroborate official references on this subject, but they also invite to reflect on how these ideas were able to circulate and crystallize as part of the imaginary of several different generations of Spaniards and Conquistadores. Este artículo examina el contenido de un tipo de fuente que ha sido poco considerada por la historiografía para el estudio de la “mala fama” asociada al territorio de Chile durante el siglo XVI. Hasta el presente, se han exhibido, principalmente, los escritos de los cronistas, cartas de las autoridades más connotadas e historiadores contemporáneos a los hechos como las pruebas privilegiadas que forjaron esta visión negativa. Este estudio indaga en las informaciones de un tipo de fuente diferente, la cual también permitió ahondar esta reputación: las probanzas de méritos y servicios que se realizaron durante las tres primeras décadas de la conquista española (1535-1565). Proponemos que estos escritos contribuyeron de forma valiosa en la trasmisión de la “mala fama”, ya que además de permitir corroborar las referencias oficiales sobre este tema, invitan a imaginar cómo estas noticias circularon y se instalaron en diferentes generaciones de españoles y conquistadores en América
