dc.descriptionThis paper analyzes the main reactions of the chilean dominant culture at the onset of film shows, in its first decade of deployment. The article argues that it’s not enough to conceptualize these attitudes with the traditional change/ continuity pair (or impact/skepticism), introducing a new linchpin: the sociocultural conflict. It is proposed that the diffusion of cinema is marked by the confrontation between an elite who wanted to give the activity a civilizing character, and managers who, in the medium term, chose a recreational and festive use.en-US
dc.descriptionEste trabajo analiza las principales reacciones de la cultura dominante chilena ante la aparición de los espectáculos cinematográficos, en su primera década de despliegue. A partir de la revisión de la crónica teatral de periódicos masivos de Santiago y Valparaíso, el artículo sostiene que es insuficiente conceptualizar estas recepciones en el binomio cambio/continuidad (o impacto/escepticismo), introduciendo un nuevo eje articulador: el conflicto sociocultural. Se propone que la difusión del cine en Chile está marcada por la confrontación entre una élite que quería darle un carácter civilizatorio a la actividad y unos gestores que, en el mediano plazo, optaron por un uso recreativo y festivo.es-ES
