dc.description	After a brief presentation of the notary’s office of Santiago de Chile during the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries, this article analyses the practical knowledge of the scribes, as it appears from the examination of the city’s notarial records. It shows the importance of the notary’s hand, the use of speaking, or lacking of it, in various common situations. In spite of the alleged limits of the written culture as a popular media in a colonial society, it underlines the wide range of the notary’s stage in urban daily life, and the multiple possibilities of expression that it provides to the disabled or unabled ones.	en-US
dc.description	Tras una breve presentación de las escribanías de Santiago de Chile en los siglos XVII y XVIII, este artículo analiza el quehacer práctico de los oficiales de pluma, tal como surge del examen de los protocolos notariales de la ciudad. Destaca la importancia de la mano del escribano, el uso de la palabra oral, o la ausencia de ella, en diversas situaciones que se consideran usuales en aquél tiempo. Pese a los supuestos límites de la cultura escrita en tanto medio de comunicación popular en la sociedad colonial, subraya la amplitud de la instancia notarial en el cotidiano urbano y las múltiples posibilidades de expresión que ofrece para otorgantes discapacitados o incapacitados.	es-ES
