The construction of social time is a ground of sociological research, however this aspect is generally overlooked or ignored as if it were a fixed frame established a priori, as if it did not constitute, by itself, an essential issue in social processes. I try to show that it is not only a constitutive element in the configuration of the symbolic and cultural order of societies; but it is also an essential aspect that also impacts the material reproduction of social life. Even more, it is a matter of a disputed terrain, insofar the ways of remembering and building collective memory and also the way of anticipating future projects and build utopias, both of them produce discourses and praxis that either maintain and reproduce the status quo, or they resist, transform or break it. Thus, I propose to explore the epistemic and heuristic richness of the categories “collective memory” and “utopian function” to interpret and explain the meaning of collective action and social change.La construcción del tiempo social es uno de los aspectos fundamentales en la investigación sociológica, sin embargo este aspecto es generalmente obviado o pasado por alto como si se tratara de un marco fijo o una coordenada establecida a priori, como si éste no constituyera, por sí mismo, un aspecto esencial en los procesos sociales. Lo que intento mostrar en este texto es de que no sólo se trata de un elemento constitutivo en la configuración del orden simbólico y cultural de las sociedades; sino que también la temporalidad interviene en las formas de reproducción material y en todos los niveles de la vida social. Aún más, se trata, de un terreno en disputa, en la medida en que las formas de recordar y construir memora colectiva; así como de anticipar proyectos de futuro y utopías, producen discursos y praxis que, o bien mantienen y reproducen, o bien resisten, transforman o rompen el status quo. Así, me propongo mostrar la riqueza epistémica y heurística de las categorías ‘memoria colectiva’ y ‘función utópica’ para interpretar y explicar el sentido de la acción colectiva y el cambio social.
