Factors that create and perpetuate the stigma of people with schizophrenia are analyzed, and at the same time, the implications associated to treatment process and rehabilitation of patients is identified. The study is based on a qualitative-descriptive design, with intentional sampling. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 mental health professionals with at least 7 years of experience in working with patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Analysis of the collected data is performed through thematic content analysis. The results indicate that stereotypes and prejudice are based on the historical record of madness and, in turn, are promoted by the media based on lack of information and education on the disease. Stigma appears as a phenomenon hindering early detection and treatment adherence; making patients more prone to experience relapses, intensifying their psychotic symptoms; generating loss identity, self-esteem and autonomy construction, which significantly interferes with the process of occupational therapy and social reintegration of the subject. It is concluded that stigma of people with schizophrenia is a current and longstanding problem that negatively affects patients’ treatment and rehabilitation process, affected not only those who suffer the disorder but also to their families, due to fear of social exclusion. Stigma is a phenomenon that must be problematized on the general population level, as well as by professionals involved in the treatment of this disease.Se analizan los factores que generan y perpetúan la estigmatización de la persona con diagnóstico de esquizofrenia y se identifican las repercusiones que ello conlleva para el tratamiento y rehabilitación del paciente. El estudio utiliza un diseño cualitativo-descriptivo y de muestreo de tipo intencionado. Se realizan entrevistas en profundidad a 10 profesionales de la salud mental con una experien- cia mínima de 7 años de trabajo con pacientes con esquizofrenia. El análisis de los datos se realiza mediante contenido temático. Los resultados indican que los estereotipos y prejuicios se fundan en el abordaje histórico cultural de la locura y son promovidos por los medios de comunicación en base a la falta de información y educación respecto de la enfermedad. La estigmatización dificulta la detección precoz y la adhesión al tratamiento, vulnera al paciente a experimentar recaídas, intensifica su sintomatología psicótica, genera perjuicios en la construcción de la identidad, autoestima y autonomía e interfiere significativamente en el proceso de tratamiento y reinserción social ocupacional del sujeto. Se concluye que la estigmatización de la persona con diagnóstico de esquizofrenia es una problemática actual, que repercute negativamente en el proceso de tratamiento y rehabilitación, afectando al que sufre el trastorno y a su familia por temor a la exclusión social. La estigmatización es un fenómeno que debe ser problematizado a nivel de la población en general, y por los profesionales dedicados al tratamiento de esta patología.
