In a general way, religion has been a factor of rivalry and conflict between groups within each one of the main religions and between religions, even if that doesn’t mean that other conditioning factors, as economics, cultural or geostrategic, are weaker to explain wars and other forms of conflict that occurs between social groups and/or nations.In this paper, I put a special emphasis to the conflicts concerning Islam, as well between Sunnis and Shi’ites than between Muslims and no-Muslims, because it’s nowadays a theme that, going together with terrorist attacks -mostly in the last twenty years- is representing the biggest threat for democracy and individual and collective liberties in those societies where these values exist. What had produced the so-called radical Islamism? To what degree the socio-economic transformations in the Muslim societies and in those with the higher levels of development can explain this phenomenon? These are some of the questions that founds here my reflection.De manera general, la religión ha constituido un factor de rivalidad y de conflicto entre grupos en el seno mismo de cada una de las principales religiones y entre religiones, sin que esto implique que otros factores (económicos, culturales, geoestratégicos, etc.) son menos poderosos para explicar las guerras y otras formas de conflicto que intervienen entre grupos sociales y/o entre naciones. En este artículo le doy un énfasis especial a los conflictos que conciernen al islam, tanto entre sunitas y chiítas como entre musulmanes y no-musulmanes, porque es hoy por hoy un tema que, ligado al terrorismo y a los atentados que éste ha llevado a cabo -principalmente desde unos veinte años a esta parte- representa un desafío para la democracia y las libertades individuales y colectivas de aquellas sociedades en que éstas existen.¿Qué ha producido al llamado islamismo radical? ¿En qué medida las transformaciones socioeconómicas de las sociedades musulmanas y de las sociedades con los más altos niveles de desarrollo pueden explicar este fenómeno? He allí algunas de las interrogantes que trato aquí, aunque sea brevemente, de analizar.
