The Effect of Intermixed and Blocked Preexposure to Stimuli in a Task of Identifying Visual Stimuli

| dc.description | Two experiments were conducted to assess the preexposure effects in stimuli differentiation by means of same/different judgments in a target identification task. The general aim of the study was testing whether or not the intermixed preexposure to the stimuli might improve the performance of the participants in the task in a greater extent that the blocked preexposure. Experiment 1 found a general benefic effect of the preexposure in the subsequent ability to differentiate the stimuli, being this effect similar after intermixed and blocked preexposure to the stimuli. For Experiment 2, more complex and similar stimuli were created, adding more common elements to the stimuli used in Experiment 1. In this case, a benefit of the intermixed, but not of the blocked preexposure, was observed at the beginning of the task. It is estimated that participants who received the blocked preexposure schedule improved their performance during the task, being then similar to the performance showed by the participants who received the intermixed preexposure schedule. This finding might indicate a potentially relevant interaction between the preexposure effects and the learning occurring during the task conducted to asses such effects. The implications that this potential interaction might have for perceptual learning are discussed. | en-US |
| dc.description | Se presentan dos experimentos dirigidos a comprobar los efectos de preexposición a dos estímulos visuales similares sobre su diferenciación posterior en una tarea de identificación de un estímulo muestra mediante juicios de igual/diferente. El objetivo general del trabajo fue comprobar si la preexposición alterna a los estímulos podría facilitar la actuación de los participantes en dicha tarea en mayor medida que su preexposición en bloques separados de ensayos. El Experimento 1 encontró que la preexposición, en general, mejoró la habilidad de los participantes para diferenciar los estímulos preexpuestos en la tarea posterior. Aparentemente, el efecto de la preexposición alterna y en bloques fue similar. En el Experimento 2 se utilizaron estímulos más complejos y similares (con más elementos en común), encontrándose evidencia de que la preexposición alterna a los estímulos, pero no su preexposición en bloques separados de ensayos, pudo facilitar la actuación inicial de los participantes en la tarea. Se estima que los participantes que recibieron preexposiciones en bloque pudieron mejorar a lo largo de la tarea, igualando su actuación a la de los participantes que recibieron el programa de preexposición alterno. Se discuten las implicaciones que una posible interacción entre los efectos de preexposición y el aprendizaje que se produce en las tareas que se utilizan para valorarlos podría tener en la investigación del aprendizaje perceptivo. | es-ES |
