| dc.description | Este trabajo examina la relación entre movilidad social e hidalguía en Castilla y América a lo largo de cinco siglos, a través del estudio en detalle de una familia de hidalgos peninsulares, los Villafañe y Guzmán, que dominaron la vida local en las provincias de La Rioja y Córdoba (Argentina) a través de sus lazos de parentesco. El estudio confirma que la escasa movilidad social de la sociedad colonial y las ventajas en el acceso a ciertas actividades podrían explicar el carácter duradero de la desigualdad socioeconómica en América Latina. | dc.description | We examine social mobility and “hidalguía” in Castile across five centuries through the case of a family of Peninsular “hidalgos,” the Villafañes and Guzmanes, who dominated local politics in the provinces of La Rioja and Córdoba (Argentina) through kinship. The study confirms that the absence of mobility in colonial society and the advantages of access to certain professions might explain the long-lasting character of socio-economic inequality in Latin America.
