Este artículo busca analizar el uso de la fuente de Laymundo Ortega por Bernardo de Brito en la Monarchia Lusitana y abordar la pregunta de para qué el cronista emplea esta fuente falsificada y hasta aquel momento completamente desconocida. Tras una introducción a la figura ficticia de Laymundo y su obra manuscrita, comienza el análisis de su empleo en la crónica de Brito. Se trabaja a partir de una fuente primaria, analizando las referencias a Laymundo y poniéndolas en contexto con las crónicas peninsulares de aquella época. La conclusión principal del trabajo es que Brito hace uso del texto de Laymundo para colocar a Portugal en un lugar de preeminencia en los orígenes de la historia ibérica. La fuente de Laymundo sirve para probar los argumentos para los que no existen fuentes y que, por lo tanto, no han aparecido de esta forma en otras crónicas.Palabras clave: Historia de la historiografía, Crónica, Portugal, Fuentes falsas.This article seeks to analyze the use of Laymundo Ortega as a source by Bernardo de Brito in the Monarchia Lusitana and answer the question what is it for that the chronicler employs the forged source which until then was completely unknown. After an introduction on the fictional figure of Laymundo and his manuscript begins the analysis of his use in Brito’s chronicle. We work from the primary source on by analyzing the references to Laymundo and by putting them in the context of the peninsular chronicles of that time. The main conclusion of our work is that Brito uses Laymundo in order to put Portugal in a preeminent place in the origins of Iberian history. The source of Laymundo is used to prove the arguments for which are no sources available and which, therefore, had not appeared this way in other chronicles.Keywords: History of historiography, Chronicle, Portugal, Forged sources.
