Social support has become a topic of great interest in various social science and health disciplines. Social support has been defined as assistance, help or information that leads people to believe that they are loved, cared for and valued and that they share a mutual obligation with people in a network. There are several scales that assess social support, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) being a short and easy-to-use self-report instrument that has been used with young people in various geographical contexts, but in Chile this measure does not have sufficient evidence of validity. The aim of the study was to determine the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) in a sample of adolescents from the Metropolitan Region in Chile. The results show that Cronbach's Alpha of the total scale was .88 and the dimensions family (α=.85), friends (α=.89) and significant persons (α=.87). In the Exploratory Factorial Analysis of main components with varimax rotation, it is observed that the 12 items of the scale were grouped in three factors that explained 73.59% of the variance. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis shows the three-dimensional structure of the scale (family, friends and significant people), whose goodness-of-fit indices are adequate, and the standardized factor loads of the items fluctuate between .73 and .84. The implications of this study are to have a psychometrically valid, reliable and brief measure to administer to schooled and urban adolescents.El apoyo social se ha convertido en un tema de gran interés en distintas disciplinas de ciencias sociales y de la salud. El apoyo social ha sido definido como asistencia, ayuda o información que lleva a las personas a creer que son amadas, cuidadas y valoradas y que comparten una obligación mutua con las personas de una red. Existen diversas escalas que evalúan apoyo social, siendo la Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) un instrumento de autorreporte breve y de fácil utilización que ha sido utilizado con jóvenes en diversos contextos geográficos, pero en Chile esta medida no cuenta con suficientes evidencias de validez. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar las propiedades psicométricas de la Escala Multidimensional de Apoyo Social Percibido (EMASP) en una muestra de adolescentes de la Región Metropolitana en Chile. Los resultados muestran que el Alfa de Cronbach de la escala total fue de .88 y las dimensiones familia (α=.85), amigos (α=.89) y personas significativas (α=.87). En el Análisis Factorial Exploratorio de componentes principales con rotación varimax se observa que los 12 ítems de la escala se agruparon en tres factores que explicaron un 73.59% de la varianza. El Análisis Factorial Confirmatorio evidencia la estructura tridimensional de la escala (familia, amigos y personas significativas), cuyos índices de bondad de ajuste son adecuados y las cargas factoriales estandarizadas de los ítems fluctúan entre .73 y .84. Las implicancias de este estudio son contar con una medida psicométricamente válida, confiable y breve para administrar a adolescentes escolarizados y urbanos.
