Following the encyclical Fidei Donum (1957), some thirty French priests went to Chile between 1964 and 1973. They felt interpreted by the conference of Medellin (1968) and contributed to bring Catholicism closer to the working class through their own daily life and pastoral actions. This commitment to the workers and slum dwellers was often assimilated to a political stance, especially because these “red priests” were suspected of supporting socialism during the Popular Unity (1970-1973). After the military coup, these priests were blacklisted because they quickly denounced the repression. Not all of them were committed to a political party or a trade union, but they mobilized against the military dictatorship and played a central role in maintaining the institutional unity of the Chilean Church. This article focuses on how the clergymen struggled to reconcile religious, social, or political commitments, and attempts to determine whether their endeavor was specific. The work is based on interviews, and on printed sources (archives, press, memoirs, works on the trajectory of these priests). Keywords: Fidei Donum, Chile, French priests, commitment, dictatorship.en-US
