The main aim of this article is to analyze the business crisis and the income poverty of the coal industry in Chile between 1960 and 1970. In the first section, we seek to estimate income poverty of coal workers using ECLAC’ food share method. In the second section, we analyze the financial situation of coal companies and the role of the State in economic and social policies. Finally, we study the previous conditions that ended up in the nationalization of the coal industry in 1970. This research shows how the problem of the coal industry in this period is that the growth of the Chilean economy was lower than what their productive sectors needed.El objetivo principal de este artículo es analizar la crisis empresarial y la pobreza de ingresos en la industria del carbón en Chile entre 1960 y 1970. En la primera sección, se intenta estimar la pobreza de ingresos de los trabajadores del carbón usando el food share method de la CEPAL. Luego, se analiza la situación financiera de las compañías carboníferas y el rol del estado en las políticas económicas y sociales. Finalmente, se estudian las condiciones previas que desencadenan en la nacionalización en 1970. Esta investigación muestra que el problema de la industria carbonífera en este periodo tiene relación con la incapacidad de la economía de crecer al ritmo que sus sectores productivos necesitaban.
