Se estudió la vulnerabilidad humana en el distrito La Fortuna de San Carlos en Costa Rica, con base en el análisis de 12 indicadores cuantificables. En el trabajo se propone un índice de vulnerabilidad global, además de mapas complementarios. Los impactos de ciertas amenazas naturales han causado muertes en este distrito y sus alrededores, confirmando que ha habido asentamientos humanos expuestos a ellas y deficiencias que hacen más susceptibles a las personas ante los eventos adversos. El estudio genera resultados que contribuyen a una mejor zonificación de las áreas susceptibles al impacto de eventos adversos, que pueden servir para proteger vidas y evitar muertes. Se recurrió a trabajo de campo para cartografiar los asentamientos expuestos y se procesó la información de los indicadores a escala de la Unidades Geoestadísticas Mínimas. Los resultados sugieren que el indicador más influyente en la vulnerabilidad global del área estudiada es el de ‘asentamientos humanos expuestos’ y que la mayor vulnerabilidad está en la parte Oeste y Este de la zona de estudio. En general, la vulnerabilidad humana del distrito es baja.Based on the analysis of 12 quantifiable indicators, an index and map were developed to study human vulnerability in the La Fortuna de San Carlos district, Costa Rica. The impacts of certain natural hazards have caused deaths in and near the district, establishing that there have been human settlements exposed to hazards as well as deficiencies that make people more susceptible to adverse events. The study generates results that contribute to zoning, especially to highlight areas susceptible to the impact of adverse events, and to protect lives and avoid casualties. Through fieldwork, the study mapped the exposed human settlements while the information of the indicators was processed at the level of the Minimum Geostatistical Units. The results suggest that the most influential indicator in the overall vulnerability of the studied area is ‘exposed human settlements’. It is also point out that the highest vulnerability is in the western and eastern part of the studied area. Nevertheless, the district's human vulnerability is relatively low.
