dc.descriptionIn 1963, the new institutional building of the Santiago Young Men's Christian Association (YMcA) was inaugurated in the historic center of the city. It was not the first headquarters that the American-origin institution had in the capital, but it was the first designed to accommodate a mixed program, which included educational, sports, social, and cultural activities. Innovative both for the coexistence of uses and for the proposed vertical solution, the building reflected the interests of the institution and its views on how Chilean youth should be oriented in a context of modernization and accelerated social transformation. Representative of a period of collaborations between Chile and the United States, the project continues some of the logics of interwar pan-Americanism, but in a context of the Cold War. Its conception and management condense transnational power relations, within a global framework of political, commercial, and cultural interests. Financed with contributions from the International Committee of Young Men's Christian Associations of the United States and Canada, American companies installed in Chile, and American philanthropic societies, its construction is the result of the relationships between business capital and a civil entity of religious origin. In the intersections between political history and the history of the city, the article analyzes the design, financing, and construction of an institutional building based on institutional archives, seeking to understand the shared visions between the Association and a business ecosystem regarding market economy, youth education, and liberal democracy.en-US
dc.descriptionEn 1963 fue inaugurado el nuevo edificio institucional de la Asociación Cristiana de Jóvenes de Santiago, ubicado en el centro histórico de la ciudad. No era la primera sede que la institución de origen norteamericano tenía en la capital, pero sí la primera diseñada para albergar un programa mixto, que incluía actividades pedagógicas, deportivas, sociales y culturales. Innovador tanto por la convivencia de usos como por la solución vertical propuesta, el edificio reflejaba los intereses de la institución y sus visiones respecto a cómo debía ser orientada la juventud chilena en un contexto de modernización y acelerada transformación social. Representativo de un periodo de colaboraciones entre Chile y Estados Unidos, el proyecto es continuista de algunas de las lógicas del panamericanismo de entreguerras, pero en un contexto de Guerra Fría. Su concepción y gestión condensan relaciones de poder transnacional, dentro de un marco global de intereses políticos, comerciales y culturales. Financiado con aportes del Comité Internacional de las Asociaciones Cristianas de Jóvenes de los Estados Unidos y Canadá, de empresas norteamericanas instaladas en Chile y de sociedades filantrópicas estadounidenses, su construcción es resultado de las relaciones entre el capital empresarial y una entidad civil de origen religioso. En los cruces entre la historia política y la historia de la ciudad, el artículo indaga en los entretelones del diseño, financiamiento y construcción de un edificio sede a partir de archivos institucionales, buscando comprender las visiones compartidas entre la Asociación y un ecosistema empresarial en relación a la economía de mercado, la educación de los jóvenes y la democracia liberal.es-ES
